- Straight truck with 3-axles pulling a trailer with combined loaded weights of 26,000-lbs or less - requires an Indiana IRP plate / IRP Indianapolis. Read about the IFTA requirements for this truck below
- Straight truck, or a straight truck pulling a trailer with a loaded weight, or combined loaded weights of 26,000-lbs or less: If this truck is picking up and delivering any load inside another state without leaving that state with the load, it will need an Indiana IRP plate / IRP Indianapolis. If the loaded weight of the truck, or the truck and trailer is 16,000-lbs or under, you will be issued and pay for a 16,000-lbs Indiana IRP license plate / IRP Indianapolis, the lightest Indiana IRP plate available. For the IFTA requirements for these trucks: you have the option of not registering for IFTA. Or, you can register for IFTA, put the IFTA decals on the doors and avoid problems at the scales or if you are stopped on the highway by a state police officer. If you register for IFTA, you will need to file your quarterly IFTA reports with the state on a timely basis (there is a $50 penalty for any late filing), but they can all be 'zero' reports with no payments due to the state. Again, if you are going to pick up and deliver a load inside another state, you will need an Indiana IRP plate / IRP Indianapolis or Indiana IRP plates with Indiana IRP registration, IRP Indianapolis Indiana, If you are For-Hire, you may need trucking authority from that state to pick up and deliver loads inside the state. Indiana residents or an Indiana Company needing Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office:
- Application as an individual in your personal name or in a d/b/a name with an Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis: You must live in Indiana, show proof of Indiana residency and have filed the previous 3 years of Indiana State Income Taxes on the IT-20 forms. Again, with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office, you need to have a valid Indiana CDL drivers license, Indiana titled vehicle or vehicles, and filed your 2290 Federal Highway Use Tax for the current tax year if your vehicle or vehicles will be plated at 55,000-lbs or more. Before the state grants Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office, you need to have active MC Authority, or be leased to a Carrier with MC Authority. If you are a Private Carrier or haul Exempt Commodities, this needs to show on the MCS-150 as MC Authority is not required. We can do these processes for you. If you are not leased to a trucking company, you will need to register for IFTA fuel tax and UCR - Unified Carrier Registration before the Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates is issued by the IRP Indianapolis office. Again, we can do this work for you.
- Application as a Single Member Limited Liability Company (LLC), or Single Officer Corporation with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis: You must live in Indiana and show proof of Indiana residency and have an Indiana CDL drivers license. The person who is the Single Member of the LLC, or the Single Officer in the Corporation has to have an Indiana CDL drivers license before Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office can be done. If that person does not have an Indiana CDL drivers license, the Indiana IRP office / IRP Indianapolis will not grant Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates. The truck or semi-tractor to be plated must have an Indiana title. If the vehicle is a leased vehicle, you will need a copy of the leasing company title (from any state), a copy of the lease agreement and a Power of Attorney from the leasing company to you or your company. If you are signing on individually-owned trucks by truck owners (Registrants), the titles need not be Indiana titles. They can be issued by other states. You will need to show the current year's 2290 Federal Highway Use Tax has been filed and paid on the vehicles you will be setting up Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office. If the vehicle or vehicles were purchased in less than 60 days before Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office, proof of the 2290 tax filing is not required by the Indiana IRP office / IRP Indianapolis, but you will still need to file the 2290 tax with the IRS. Again, before Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates is made with the IRP Indianapolis office, you must have filed the past 3 years of your state income taxes as well as the LLC or Corporate state taxes if you have an LLC or Corporation, or for the years the LLC or Corporatation has been in existence if less than 3 years. Before Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates is made with the IRP Indianapolis office, you will need to have active MC Authority or be leased to a company with MC Authority. If you are a Private Carrier or haul Exempt Commodities, this needs to show on the MCS-150 as MC Authority is not required. We can do this for you. Again, these are the requirements for Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office. If you are not leased to a trucking company, in addition to the Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office, you will need to register for IFTA fuel tax and the Unified Carrier Registration process, or UCR. - Application as a Multi-Member Liability Company (LLC) or Multi-Officer Corporation with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis office: The Limited Liability Company or Corporation will need to show it is occupying a commercial office or commercial building in Indiana with a copy of the lease and a landline phone hookup in the company name at the office or building. The Indiana IRP office / IRP Indianapolis will Google this office or building to ensure validity. To be issued Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office, you will need to register the company name with the Indiana Secretary of State and be issued an EIN / Federal Identification Number. The Indiana IRP office / IRP Indianapolis requires proof you have valid MC Authority or are leased to a trucking company with MC Authority. If you are a Private Carrier, or haul Exempt Commodities, this will need to show on the MCS-150 as MC Authority is not required. We can do the MCS-150 process if it has not already been done. Again, to do Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office, the state requires Indiana truck or tractor titles and the filing of the current 2290 Federal Highway Use Tax. Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office:
Residency Requirements: Applicants with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis are required to be Indiana residents.
Operational Categories: Applicants needing Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis fall into one (or two) of the following categories:
- Registrant - where the truck or trucks are leased to a trucking company with MC Authority
- For-Hire Company - where the truck owner or the trucking company has it's own MC Authority
- Exempt For-Hire Company - where the truck owner or company hauls Exempt Commodities exclusevily
- Private Company - where the truck owner or company hauls commodities or items belonging to that owner or company without compensation.
Title Requiements: With Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, the IRP Indianapolis office requires the trucks or semi-tractors to be titled in Indiana, or with leased trucks from a leasing company, copies of the title from any state, a Power of Attorney from the leasing company to the individual or company leasing the truck or tractor, and a copy of the lease agreement. If an owner-operator will be leasing a truck or tractor to you or your company's MC Authority and you will be providing the Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates from IRP Indianapolis, the title can be from any state. You will need a valid lease agreement with the owner-operator.
USDOT Number Requirements: With Indiana IRP registratation for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis, you will be required to have a USDOT number if you are a Carrier with your own MC Authority, or hauling Exempt Commodities, or as a Private Carrier crossing state lines. If you are leasing on to a trucking company as a Registrant, you will not be required to get a USDOT number.
IFTA Fuel Tax Requirements: The truck owner or company with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis will need to have the truck or trucks covered by the IFTA fuel tax registration process. If the truck or trucks are leased to a trucking company, the trucking company typically provides the IFTA fuel tax coverage with IFTA fuel tax stickers and a copy of the IFTA cab-card. However, some trucking companies require the truck owner leasing their truck or trucks to them do their own IFTA registration with the state. We can do this for them. Otherwise the truck owner or company with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate of Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office will need to register for IFTA fuel tax and comply with the state quaterly IFTA fuel tax filing requirements. We can do the quarterly IFTA fuel tax filings.
2290 Federal Highway Use Tax: The 2290 Federal Highway Use Tax needs to have been filed with the IRS on all commercial vehicles plated at 55,000-lbs or above, whether Indiana IRP plated or BMV plated. A stamped copy of the current 2290 tax form is required with the Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office. Farm-plated trucks at 55,000-lbs or heavier are also required to have the 2290 tax filed on these trucks. The 2290 tax has to be filed with an EIN / Federal Identification Number. We can apply for an EIN / Federal Identifiation Number and file your 2290 Highway Use Tax for you.
Prior IRP Registration: An applicant who previously had an IRP plate on their truck (their own plate or a plate issued by the company they were leased to) during the reporting period will be required to provide the mileages traveled in each state during this reporting time period, with the Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianpolis office.
Limited Liability Company (LLC), Partnership (LP) or Corporation: An LLC, LP or Corporation requiring Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianpolis office needs to establish the LLC, LP or Corporation with the Indiana Secretary of State and be issued an EIN / Federal Identification Number. We can register the LLC, LP or Corporation with the Secretary of State and obtain an EIN / Federal Identification Number.
A Farmer Crossing State Lines in a truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,001-lbs or more for a truck, or with Gross Combined Weight Ratings (GCWR) of 10,001-lbs or more for a truck and trailer or semi-tractor and trailer is required to have a USDOT number and register for the UCR process - Unified Carrier Registration. If the truck, or truck and trailer, or semi-tractor and trailer is 26,001-lbs or heavier crossing state lines with a farm plate, you will be required to register for a USDOT number, IFTA fuel tax and UCR. If you haul exempt loads for pay across state lines and weigh 26,001-lbs or more (grain from the local elevator, livestock, etc), you will be required to register for a USDOT number, IFTA fuel tax, UCR and Indiana IRP registration with an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis. If you haul non-exempt loads across state lines, in addition to the requirements shown above, you will also need MC Authority. Out of State Residents or Company moving to Indiana and needing to set up with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or for Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office: If you are planning on moving to Indiana and require Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates at the IRP Indianapolis office, the following information, documents and credentials are required:

If you are not leased to a trucking company, you will need to register for IFTA fuel tax and file for the UCR - Unified Carrier Registration - before the Indiana IRP registration can be done for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis can be completed. If you were granted MC Authority or issued an EIN / Federal Identification Number while living in another state, updates will need to be done with the IRS, USDOT, FMCSA and the BOC-3 List of Process Agents. With Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis, you will need to have valid MC Authority or being leased to a trucking company with MC Authority. If you are a Private Carrier of haul Exempt Commodities, this will need to be registered on the MCS-150 as MC Authority is not required. We can do these processes for you. Again, these are the Indiana IRP registration requirements for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis. If you are not leased to a trucking company, you will need to register for IFTA fuel tax and UCR - Unified Carrier Registration - before the Indiana IRP registration process can be completed for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis. If you were issued a USDOT number or granted MC Authority or issued an EIN / Federal Identification Number while residing in another state, updates will need to be done with the IRS, USDOT, FMCSA and with the BOC-3. If you were issued an EIN / Federal Identification Number for your company while residing in another state, the IRS will need to be updated to show your new Indiana address. If you were issued MC Authority while residing in another state, the BOC-3, USDOT and FMCSA will all need to be submitted updates to show your new Indiana Address. Out-of-State Company remaining in it's home state, but needing to set up an office or terminal in Indiana and will be needing Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office: If the company is planning to establish an Indiana office or terminal requiring Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or for Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office, the company needs to meet the following requirements:
- Application as a Single Member LLC or a Single Officer Corporation with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office: you will need to show the LLC or Corporation is occupying a commercial office or commercial building in Indiana with a copy of the lease. The Indiana IRP office will Google this office or building to show proof of existence and location. The company will also need to set up a landline phone to the office or terminal in the company name. To be set up with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office, the company name needs to be registered with the Indiana Secretary of State as a Foreign LLC or Foreign Corporation doing business in Indiana and have an EIN / Federal Identification Number. If the company is a Private Carrier or hauls Exempt Commodities, this will need to show on the MCS-150 as MC Authority is not required. The company can use it's home IFTA fuel tax credentials with the Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office. Or it can apply for Indiana IFTA credentials to be issued with Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates, IRP Indianapolis. If the company has not paid it's Unified Carrier Registration fees (UCR) for the current or past years, this will need to be done. We will need the company EIN / Federal Identification Number and copies of the Secretary of State documents from the company's home state. The application process also requires the names of the LLC Members, LP Partners or Corporate Officers together with their addresses and Social Security Numbers. Again, the Indiana IRP registration process for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office requires the above-mentioned documents, credentials and information. The company will be unable to obtain Indiana titles on any of it's vehicles as the company is not based in Indiana, but an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates will be issued to the company vehicles as long as the requirements mentioned above are met. Before the Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates by the IRP Indianapolis office is completed, the company must show it has active MC Authority or is leased to a trucking company with valid MC Authority. If the company is a Private Carrier or hauls Exempt Commodities, the MCS-150 must show that as MC Authority is not required. You can use the company's home state IFTA fuel tax credentials for the Indiana IRP registraton for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates with the IRP Indianapolis office. Or the company can register for Indiana IFTA credentials with the Indiana IRP registration for an Indiana IRP plate or Indiana IRP plates. The company's UCR - Unified Carrier Registration must be valid for the current and past years, otherwise the company will need to register for UCR.
